To supply nitrogen to its laser machines, E-BOX was changing 12 pack cylinders out 2 to 3 times a day. This was not only time consuming, but moving the cylinders with a forklift was also a safety concern.

Atlas recommended installing a bulk tank of E-BOX’s nitrogen mix to eliminate the hassle of moving the cylinders throughout the day. This gas supply solution minimized the facility’s downtime and maximized their production efficiency.

Ben Gilbert, Mike Fernandez, and Jeff Kennedy met at The University of Alabama and instantly became friends with a similar interest: barbecue. In 1988, the three guys met up with Tuscaloosa native, Moses Day, to learn how to fire roast meats. Moses’ T-Town home quickly became a hotspot once he began to barbecue. DSW, or Dixie Saw Works, began as a converting knife company in Birmingham, Alabama in 1943. Now, DSW is the most technologically advanced cutting service in the southeast. The Customer Challenge

DSW Production Manager, Peyton Palmer, contacted Clay Hudson at Atlas Welding Supply to solve two production challenges they were experiencing. First, an increase in laser cutting and machinery was causing gas overdraw, which was delaying DSW’s production. And secondly, DSW needed assistance with welder certifications and robotic welding parameters with part layout to meet their production goals.

The Solution

To solve the gas overdraw and delayed production challenges, Atlas offered an increased nitrogen supply with a bigger vessel and a trifecta delivery system. This gas supply solution resulted in increased laser demand and eliminated delays for full production.

Atlas also worked with CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) to certify DSW’s welders and processes. Specifically, Clay helped troubleshoot parts for layouts and robotic weld parameters as well as hand welders. We also provided DSW with bulk argon and bulk drums of wire to further support their demands and production goals to minimize wasted time.

“In the short-term, the solutions Clay and Atlas have provided yielded quicker turnaround times, which has empowered us to service our customers faster,” Palmer noted. “The solutions resulted in immediate cost savings, which will turn into tremendous savings in the long run. Founded by Holt Rast in 1976, Rast Construction specializes in heavy and municipal work, including water, sewer, gas pipelines, plant facilities, boring, tunnels, sub-aqueous, grading, steam, chilled water lines and other specialties.

Rast Construction relies on Atlas Welding Supply to provide nitrogen tube trailers for various jobs that require pipe pressure testing. Pipe pressure testing is carried out after the installation of any pipeline before it is put into use.

The purpose of the pressure testing is to investigate the various limits of the pipeline–testing areas such as the reliability, maximum capacity, leaks, joint fittings and pressure. Without this information the pipe can not be put into service and the owner/operators have no confirmation that the pipe meets certain specifications. There are two commonly used methods for pressure testing piping: a hydro-static test or Hydrotest and a pneumatic test.

Hydrotest vs Pneumatic Pressure Testing

A hydrotest, also known as a hydro-static test, is performed by using water as the test medium. A pneumatic test, on the other hand, uses air, nitrogen, or any non-flammable and non-toxic gas as the test medium.

A Nitrogen Tube Trailer Solution for Rast Construction

For Rast Construction, a nitrogen pneumatic pressure test was the most cost-effective and time-saving solution. While water is less an expensive test medium than nitrogen, nitrogen gets the job done significantly quicker, which is a huge benefit to Rast Construction. And because Rast Construction needed a large volume of nitrogen, a nitrogen tube trailer was ideal. A tube trailer delivers the required supply of nitrogen straight to Rast Construction job sites.

“We hook the nitrogen tube trailer up right on our job site,” said John W., part owner of Rast Construction. “And it only takes a few hours, where water would take a week or so to drain and dry out. Huge time savings!”
